The Mission of the Cavern Arts Project

The Cavern Arts Project was formed to coordinate an exhibit of world-class works of art inspired by Carlsbad Caverns National Park, entitled "Underground Visions: Carlsbad Caverns Through the Artist's Eye." This exhibit of photography and original works of art in other media will span over eighty years, forming a continuum of how the cavern has inspired visual artists since its discovery in the late 1800s.

The exhibit will open in conjunction with the reopening of the remodeled park visitor center in 2008.

This striking photograph was taken in 1930 by Colonel Boles, the first superintendent of Carlsbad Caverns. The photograph was taken during the summer solstice, when a dramatic shaft of sunlight penetrates deep into the cavern for only a few days each year. The figure in the picture is Colonel Boles' young daughter.
